Leap Into the Gift of Reading

This spring our church submitted a Church-School Partnership Grant proposal to the Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  On August 29th we learned that we were awarded an $800 grant in support of our partnership with Lily Lake Elementary School which we are calling “Leap Into the Gift of Reading!” And were promised an additional $200 if we attend the Church-School Partnership Round-Up on September 16th, which we plan to do!

Our partnership with Lily Lake Elementary School includes the following:

Church Volunteers helping out in the Lily Lake Elementary School Media Center

A reading-related activity in January and February in conjunction with “I Love to Read Month”

Lunchtime book club opportunities throughout the year

Building and “stewarding” a Little Free Library on school property

We kicked off the new school year with gift bags for each of the 30 classroom teachers and a simpler gift for 50 additional staff members.  Each gift contained a note expressing our appreciation and encouragement to the whole Lily Lake community as they begin a new school year, and letting them know that we are holding them all in our hearts. On the night of the school Open House, two of our volunteers were there to welcome new families to Lily Lake and introduce them to the school’s media center.

Many thanks to Dave Swanson for helping to design images and a logo for our “Leap Into the Gift of Reading” initiative.  We love our little frog!

If you want to know more about these projects, or would like to get involved in our Lily Lake Connection, please speak with any of our media center volunteers:  Linda Ash, Ann Haraldson, Sue Hibberd, Myrt Potter, Pastors Donna and Marty, and new this fall: Vicki Anderson, Kay Calvin, and Chris Nelson.

And even if you aren’t able to be involved directly in this ministry, please hold the teachers, staff, students, and families of Lily Lake Elementary School in your hearts!

In a related ministry, proceeds from the Mission Committee’s Rally Day Brunch will again be used to provide each classroom teachers at Lily Lake Elementary School with a gift card to be used to enhance their classroom environment.  This year gift cards will also be given to the teachers of Sunny Hill Preschool, and the Mission Committee is also planning to serve ice cream at the Sunny Hill open house on September 21st.

In all these ways we are Growing in our Love of Neighbors here at the corner of Greeley and Myrtle!
