We are growing in our love of the neighbors who are near to us.
We believe Christ calls each of us into ministry. The church helps God’s people discover their own gifts and how they can be used to glorify God. Many of us discover opportunities for ministry in the needs of our neighbors or co-workers, family or friends. Our church wants to support you in your personal ministry. In addition, our congregation has a history of involvement in supporting community ministries in the Stillwater/Washington County area:
Valley Outreach/Food Shelf
Our congregation joins our community in supporting the work of Valley Outreach. We donate food and financial support throughout the year, and especially during March Minnesota FoodShare Month. Several of our members volunteer regularly at the Food Shelf, and several times a year our congregation sends groups of volunteers to assist the clients with their shopping and help stock the shelves.
Hope for the Journey Home Family Shelter
Hope for the Journey Home is a family shelter on the grounds of Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church in Oakdale. It is supported by a number of churches throughout Washington County. Our congregation takes a turn two weeks a year providing volunteers to help out during three shifts: after school, dinner/early evening, and overnight/breakfast.
Little Free Library/Literacy Focus
During the summer of 2016 we constructed two Little Free Libraries for our church property. The one located on Myrtle Street contains books for youth and adults. The one on Greeley Street focuses on books for children and families. We see these lending libraries as an outreach to our neighborhood and as part of a larger plan to support literacy in our community.
Sunny Hill Preschool
The First United Methodist Church has housed a nursery school since 1960. In 1975 the name was changed to The Sunny Hill Preschool. It provides quality preschool programming for families. We are interested in growing our relationship with Sunny Hill as part of our Little Free Library/Literacy focus.
Lily Lake Elementary School
For a number of years our congregation has had a connection with Lily Lake Elementary School. We have provided gift cards which are distributed to families in times of need and have done some volunteering in the school as well. In 2017-18 we received a church-school partnership grant from the Minnesota Annual Conference to help us grow in our relationship with the school as part of our Little Free Library/Literacy focus. Our “Leap Into the Gift of Reading” initiative included expressions of appreciation to the school teachers and staff, media center volunteers, a book club, and an all school activity during “I Love to Read Month.” Check it out here.
Stillwater Highway Cleanup
Our congregation has adopted a stretch of Myrtle Street, west of the church, as a community service project. We organize a clean up event each Spring and Fall.
We are always open to new ways of being in ministry to our neighbors here at the corner of Greeley and Myrtle, within our Stillwater community, and throughout the region. If you have an idea you’d like us to consider, please let us know.
