Matthew 5:13-16, Isaiah 58:1-10
Abigail Ozanne

“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.”

  • Salt of the earth
    • Essential for both flavoring and preservation
    • A preservative – keeps from spoiling, decay, sickness (give examples of pickles, canning, salting meat)
    • A little goes a long way
  • Light of the world
    • Visible, dispelling darkness
    • Think of a time without electricity
    • A city on a hill is not hidden, likewise a light must be held high to shed the most light and to be seen
    • Light is both revealed and revealing
  • What we are to do
    • We shine the light on the way; we are not The Way
    • “We do not draw people to Christ by loudly discrediting what they believe, by telling them how wrong they are and how right we are, but by showing them a light so lovely that they want with all their hearts to know the source of it.”
    • Light breaks out from how we live – not finger pointing – but opening our hearts to the hungry and providing the for the afflicted
    • We need to help the world “taste and see that God is good”
  • Sharing the light
    • Don’t hid it under a bushel
    • Why are we hiding the light? Why have we stopped proclaiming the Gospel, the Good News?
    • Share the good news: Christ is risen! Christ has conquered sin and death.
    • Evangelism is from the Greek: angelos (messenger) and eu (good): good message, messenger
    • Good news is
      • Christ and his teachings
      • the word of God
      • hope, grace
      • the worth of each person, God is love, we are loved,
      • food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, power for the powerless, acceptance for the rejected, freedom for the oppressed
      • Jesus came to be, to share, to show: life, love, resurrection
    • “Daily news is so bad it seems the good news seldom gets heard: God’s in charge, spread the word!”
    • Why do I not proclaim: God has saved me! I am not afraid! I am not afraid of death because I know it does not have the final word.
    • We are to shed our light, God’s light
    • It’s not all about us. We point to God and get out of the way
  • We are good news
    • We are all part of God’s body
    • Unity without unanimity – when we stay together, we show the world another way to live with conflict
    • “I need you to survive”
  • So now may we let our light shine that other may see The Light and follow The Way. Let us share the good news.
