Were You There? Lenten Worship Series 2017

Lent is a season in the church year when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline. Our congregation will begin our Lenten observance with an Ash Wednesday Service of Worship on March 1st at 6:30 pm following our Wednesday evening meal.  During our service we will hear the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, celebrate communion, and receive the sign of the cross using ashes symbolizing our mortality and our call to repentance.

Our Lenten worship theme will be Were You There?  Finding Ourselves at the Foot of the Cross. We will explore the last week of Jesus’ earthly life, identifying with the very human responses of the other people who were present in the story, who became participants in the drama of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. So throughout the season, the words “Were You There?” will echo in our ears and hearts as we recognize the many ways in which we are like the ones who were there, in their faith and their doubt, in their courage and their cowardice, in their devotion and their abandonment, in their cruelty and their grief.  But we won’t leave ourselves at the foot of the cross. We aren’t meant to stay there.  We will carry this theme on into the Easter Season, with the women who discovered the empty tomb, and with others who encountered the risen Christ.  This series of sermons is inspired by a book of the same name by Eric Kolbell.  Weekly service information follows:
